Janu Basti is a highly specialized local oil-pooling therapy where 'Janu' means knee, and 'Basti' means pooling. It is designed to heal and relieve knee joint pain, stiffness, and degeneration.
In Ayurveda, osteoarthritis is caused by Vata aggravation, which dries up the joints and decreases synovial fluid. As joint greasiness reduces, friction leads to wear and tear. Retaining warm, herb-infused medicated oils locally is the most direct way to mitigate Vata, nourish cartilage, and restore joint lubrication.
Procedure of Janu Basti
check_circle1. Dough Ring Prep: A circular ring is prepared using organic moong dal and wheat flour. It is pasted securely around the knee joint to avoid any leakage.
check_circle2. Oil Pooling: Lukewarm medicated oil (maintained at 35 to 45°C) is gently poured inside the ring. To maintain the temperature, the oil is replaced periodically by the therapist for 40 minutes.
check_circle3. Absorption & Healing: The warmth and specialized herbs penetrate deep into the knee, reducing inflammation, easing pressure over nerve endings, and stimulating ligament repairs (like ACL/PCL tears).
check_circle4. Follow-up: The paste is removed, the area is wiped, and a crepe bandage is wrapped to retain the healing heat for 3 hours. Washing is not recommended immediately.
