Raktamokshana is the therapeutic bloodletting procedure in Panchakarma, utilized to immediately draw out vitiated and toxic blood.

It is highly prioritized in Sushruta Samhita for treating chronic blood impurities, inflammatory skin conditions, or any disorder where Pitta and Rakta (blood) are severely vitiated.

Leech Therapy (Jalauka Avacharana) Procedure

check_circle1. Placement: The affected localized skin/joint area is cleaned. A purified clinical medicinal leech (Jalauka) is placed on the site. If it does not stick, a tiny drop of milk or blood is applied.

check_circle2. Sucking: The leech is covered with a cold wet cloth. It sucks blood for 30-40 minutes, naturally detaching once it has drawn out the stagnant blood.

check_circle3. Cleanup: Turmeric powder is immediately applied to stop the oozing. A specialized anti-inflammatory paste of honey and ghee is applied, and a sterile bandage is placed.

check_circle4. Action: The leech's saliva contains hirudin, a natural anticoagulant and anti-inflammatory, which immediately triggers local healing, reducing pain and throbbing.
