Procedure of Shirodhara
check_circleAs the name suggests, Shirodhara involves pouring medicated liquids in the form of a continuous stream (Dhara) in a very gentle and relaxing manner over the head/forehead (Shira). This achieves a highly relaxed state of awareness, balancing the nervous system and mind.
check_circle1. Preparation: The patient lies down, and cotton pads are kept over the eyes and ears. A nice band of cloth is wrapped over the forehead to avoid dripping oil into the eyes.
check_circle2. Massage & Flow: The therapist performs a gentle head massage. Then, a lukewarm stream of medicated oil (or buttermilk/decoction) starts trickling over the forehead. Rhythmic, relaxing patterns with the stream are carried out for 45 minutes.
check_circle3. Tranquil State: The patient reaches a state of deep meditation. At the end, the patient is gently made aware of their surroundings, excess oil is wiped off, and they are advised to keep the oil on for 2 hours before bathing.
