Nasya is the therapeutic administration of medicated drops through the nostrils, playing a central role in all head and neck conditions.
In a famous quote, Acharya Vagbhata says 'Nasa Hi Sirso Dwaram' — the nose is the entry gateway to the brain and head. Delivering medicines nasal-mucosally bypasses the digestive tract, reaching the cranial systems and nervous networks directly.
Procedure of Nasya
check_circle1. Prep Massage: The patient lies comfortable, and a gentle face and neck massage is done with warm Vata-pacifying oils for 15 minutes.
check_circle2. Steaming: Medicated herbal steam (Nadi Sweda) is applied to the face and sinus areas to open cranial pathways.
check_circle3. Instillation: Lukewarm medicated oil drops (such as Anu Tailam or Shadbindu Tailam) are instilled into each nostril while the patient inhales gently.
check_circle4. Expulsion: The patient spits out any mucus or oil that reaches the throat.
check_circle5. Fumigation (Dhoomapana): Herbal smoking/fumigation is given to clear remnants of Kapha in the throat.
check_circle6. Rest: Ears are plugged with cotton, and the patient rests. Bathing is avoided for that day.
